Entering and Current Students

A scholarship has been endowed in honour of Gene Joseph (MLS, 1982) by the British Columbia Library Association, First Nations Interest Group, and the University of British Columbia. The award is offered to an aboriginal graduate student at SLAIS. It is made on the recommendation of the School of Library, Archival and Information Studies, in consultation with the First Nations House of Learning and Faculty of Graduate Studies.

iSchool Student Travel Fund

For students seeking funding to travel to and participate in conferences or workshops. All applications should be received at least four weeks prior to the event. *Students are able to apply for a maximum of $500 worth of iSchool travel grant funding per academic year*

Awards totalling $700 have been endowed in memory of Zainab Jenny Kanji for students in good academic standing enrolled in the School of Library Archival and Information Studies. Mrs. Kanji was a proud alumna of UBC. In 1969 she received her Bachelor of Library Science and as a mature student returned to UBC and completed a Masters in Library Science. Jenny had a tremendous appreciation of her education, which enabled her to establish a deeply rewarding career.

Graduating Students

A $1,000 award has been established to honour Dr. Samuel Rothstein (BA 39, MA 40, LLD 04) for a graduate student in the School of Library, Archival and Information Studies. Dr. Rothstein was the first Director of SLAIS who helped the School open the doors in 1961. He led with great imagination, innovation, and foresight. The award is offered to a student who brings the same innovative spirit to their time at SLAIS.

Program Specific Awards

MACL

Travel support to a total of $500 will be made available in an academic year to support conference attendance for a student in the MACL program. Conferences should be related to the program, such as the Children’s Literature Association Conference. Preference will be given to students who are presenting a paper or poster, or contributing to conference organization.

The School of Library, Archival and Information Studies at the University of British Columbia has established the Ronald Jobe Children's Literature Scholarship for students in the Master of Arts in Children's Literature Program. Dr. Jobe, Professor Emeritus of the Language and Literacy Department,  Faculty of Education, was  deeply involved in this interdisciplinary children's literature program jointly offered by SLAIS, LLED, the English Department and the Creative Writing Program.  Dr. Jobe established the Children's Literature Roundtables across Canada , co-ordinated the annual Serendipity conference of the Vancouver Children's Literature Roundtable, and spent years promoting Canadian children's literature worldwide, through organizations such as the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY), of which he was the first non-European President.

The School of Library, Archival and Information Studies at the University of British Columbia has established the Judith Saltman Prize for students in the Master of Arts in Children’s Literature Program. Recognized internationally as an expert on Canadian children’s literature Judith has influenced new generations of students over the past 32 years in her role as Professor within the School, as Chair of the Master of Arts in Children’s Literature (MACL) program, and developer and instructor for numerous courses in children’s literature and services to children and young adults. Her love for the field, her warmth and generosity, and knowledge of children’s literature has won the hearts of students who come to the School.

MAS and DUAL

A $1750 prize has been made available through an endowment established by friends and family in memory of Harold Naugler. The award will be given to a student in the Masters of Archival Studies Program in the School of Library, Archival and Information Studies who has achieved excellence in the study of electronic records through academic and research work. The award is made on the recommendation of the School of Library, Archival and Information Studies, in consultation with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.

Student to ACA

The ACA provides financial support for students who are selected by the ACA Conference Program Committee to speak at the student session. Also, all student members are able to register for the conference at a reduced rate. SLAIS will provide a travel stipend of up to $500 for one person or $250 each for two persons attending the conference.

Graduate Student Travel Fund

A scholarship has been established by family, friends, and colleagues of Dorothy Blakey Smith. The award is made to an outstanding student entering the second year of the Master of Archival Studies Program, on the recommendation of the School of Library, Archival and Information Studies.

A scholarship established by the Alumni Division of the School of Library, Archival and Information Studies, in honour of Margaret Burke. In her role of admissions and placement coordinator she provided students of the School with support and counselling for more than 20 years. The award is made on the recommendation of the School to a student entering the second year of any program in the School, who has demonstrated academic ability and shown promise of professional achievement. Priority will be given to alternating the award between the programs in the School if an appropriate candidate is available.

One award of $1,000 is offered to a student upon completion of the first year Master of Archival Studies Program or Dual MAS/MLIS program in the School of Library, Archival and Information Studies who demonstrates scholarly excellence and leadership promise. Professor Terry Eastwood was the first professor hired to teach in the Master of Archival Studies Program and served as Chair of the Program from 1981 until June 2000. As Interim Director, Chair of Program, teacher and mentor he was a tireless advocate of archival education and as such has been recognized nationally and internationally. Recommendations are made by SLAIS in consultation with the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

A prize has been made available by the Toronto Area Archivists Group Education Foundation in honour of James Fraser. Mr. Fraser was an archivist in New Brunswick and Toronto who died while he was a student in the UBC Master of Archival Studies program. The award is made to a top ranking student in the first year in the MAS program in the School of Library, Archival and Information Studies.

MLIS and DUAL

Entering Students

This scholarship was established in 1972 by the UBC Alumni Association in honour of Stanley T. Arkley (B.A., 1925, LL.B., 1976, UBC). It gives recognition to his long and dedicated service to the University. Active in forming the Friends of the University of B.C. Inc. (U.S.A.), he served as its President from 1957 to 1971. Largely through his leadership this organization was not only responsible for many contributions to the University from Alumni in the United States but also for the establishment of a scholarship fund to assist sons and daughters of Alumni living in the United States to attend UBC. His special interest, however, has always been the Library, to which he has made numerous and notable gifts. It is fitting, therefore, that this scholarship is awarded to a student in Librarianship selected by the School on the basis of academic ability, promise, and personal qualities.

A gift of the Fraser Valley Regional Library is offered annually to a student entering or attending the School of Library, Archival and Information Studies and who is a resident within the Fraser Valley Regional Library's service area. The award is made to a student with sound academic standing who shows professional promise. The financial circumstances of a candidate may be a consideration. In offering this scholarship, the Board of Management of the Fraser Valley Regional Library pays tribute to Dr. Helen Gordon Stewart for her manifold leadership in the development of British Columbia libraries and particularly for her pioneering efforts in the establishment of regional library service in the Fraser Valley in the years 1930-1934. The award is made on the recommendation of the School.

The scholarships are awarded on the basis of specializing in children's and young adult librarianship.

A prize has been made available by family and friends of the late Beverley M. Becker. Ms. Becker was a former student of the U.B.C. The award is given for outstanding work in courses related to reference and information services in the School of Library, Archival and Information Studies, and is made on the recommendation of the Faculty.

This medal, honouring the memory of Miss Ruth E. Cameron, for many years Chief Librarian of the City of New Westminster, is offered annually by the Board of the New Westminster Public Library. A prize endowed by the College of Physicians & Surgeons, family, friends and colleagues in honour of C. William Fraser. This prize is awarded in conjunction with the British Columbia Library Association to an outstanding graduating student in the School of Library, Archival and Information Studies. The award is given in honour of Neal Harlow, University Librarian from 1951 to 1961, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the development of the University Library and of his work as one of the founders of the School of Librarianship.

In honour of Dr. Hopkins' retirement, a group of colleagues and students decided to establish a new award within the School of Library, Archival and Information Studies to recognize the commitment that Dr. Hopkins has made in the field. The Richard Hopkins Award will recognize a graduating student in a master's program in SLAIS who demonstrates leadership and integrity, balancing academic achievement with a demonstrated committment to their chosen area.

This prize, established as a memorial to Gordon New by funds collected under the sponsorship of the University of Victoria Library, is offered to students enrolled in the Master of Library and Information Studies program. It is awarded on the recommendation of the School of Library, Archival and Information Studies for demonstrated leadership and academic or research ability in studies relating to academic libraries.
