iSchool Faculty Members Promoted to Associate Professors

Congratulations to Dr. Luanne Freund and Dr. Victoria Lemieux on their recent promotions to the rank of Associate Professor.

Associate Professor Freund received her PhD from the University of Toronto in 2008.  Her research focuses on how people interact with and use information systems and information in digital forms to carry out tasks in their personal and professional lives.  Her research is funded by SSHRC, and by NCE GRAND where she serves as a Principle Network Investigator and Co-Lead of the NEWS project. Dr. Freund is actively involved in the international Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and Information Retrieval research communities, serving on the program committees of the ACM Special Interest Group on Information Retrieval (SIGIR), Information Interaction in Context (IIiX),  Joint Conference on Digital Libraries (JCDL), and the Association for Information Science and Technology (ASIST).

Associate Professor Lemieux received her PhD from University College London in 2002. She joined UBC in 2008 following senior appointments at Credit Suisse with responsibility for global records policy management, IT Security Policy development, and the bank’s European infrastructure client services technology risk team. Her research focuses on financial records and risk, and while at UBC she has pursued research in this area as well as in visual analytics; she also founded and directs the Centre for the Investigation of Financial Electronic Records (CIFER Research). Dr. Lemieux has received a Peter Wall Institute Early Career Scholar Award, and an Emerald Literati Award for her paper on “The Records-Risk Nexus”. As well as holding a full-time appointment at the iSchool, since 2012 Dr. Lemieux has also been Director of the UBC’s Media and Graphics Interdisciplinary Centre (MAGIC).

Both Dr. Freund and Dr. Lemieux contribute greatly to teaching and student life at the School. Dr. Freund has conducted Canada-wide studies on student perceptions of education in our schools, and Dr. Lemieux has connected us to the entrepreneurial and innovative spirit of MAGIC. In 2009-10, Drs. Freund and Lemieux worked together to produce an important task force report on the School exploring synergies across programs.

We wish them both all the best in their future endeavours.
